The text is not the obstacle — the reader it assumes is.
Classical texts assume a reader with the language, the vocabulary and the surrounding scholarship. Most readers today have none of the three, and the distance is not closed by translation alone. What is needed is help reading — context, terminology and the chain back to the source — offered without standing between the reader and the text.
The distance is not only linguistic. A classical text was written for a reader who already held the vocabulary, the earlier works it answers and the conventions of its genre. Translate the words alone and the sentences become readable while the argument stays out of reach.
